Don’t Make Copies; Make A Difference!

The debate over which is better—a summer internship or summer camp experience, is a debate that’s been around longer than Carol Joy Holling Camp. Yet, year after year, we hear from our Summer Ministry Team alumni, that their experience stands out and sets their resume apart.

L. James Wright (leading campers in 1992) says he continues to use many of the skills he learned working at summer camp in his career today.

“Camp provides you with an opportunity to demonstrate leadership and other skills in a practical environment that isn’t the same as an office,” L. James Wright shared. Wright is a former Summer Ministry Team member who currently serves as District Director for a member of Congress. He also continues to share his gifts as a member of the NLOM Board of Directors.

A summer at camp will hone many core resume skills: critical thinking, problem-solving, communication, collaboration, and also key life skills, like leadership, networking, flexibility, sportsmanship, and teamwork.

“People who come to camp have a certain grit about them— particularly if they serve multiple summers,” Wright continued. “They’re also very passionate and driven people. Those certain types of personalities tend to go on to be leaders in other organizations. Mixed

with faith, that’s a pretty strong combination!”

Most importantly (we feel), a summer spent working at Carol Joy Holling and Sullivan Hills Camps strengthens a person’s faith and builds a foundation for life-long learning.

We know that joining the Summer Ministry Team is not for the faint of heart. There are long days filled with heat, bugs, dirt, and sometimes even tears of homesick campers. At the same time, the delight of mud hikes, the awe of a camper’s faith-filled questions, the joy of fun campfire, and the honor of becoming a role model to others makes it so much more than a “summer job."

What young leaders in your life would benefit from a summer working at camp? Encourage

them to consider applying to join the Summer Ministry Team at Nebraska Lutheran Outdoor

Ministries.
