NLOM Responds to Possible Flu Pandemic PDF Print E-mail
Due to the recent public health emergency issued by the United States Government and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention regarding the  H1N1 Virus, commonly known as Swine Flu, Nebraska Lutheran Outdoor Ministries is taking proactive steps to enhance the safety of our staff and the people we serve.

NLOM’s Guest Services department has re-doubled efforts and implemented three common-sense steps to assist with the prevention and spread of all bacteria:
  1. Thorough and consistent cleaning of all facilities, including public spaces and private guest rooms. Sometimes over-looked high-germ areas like light switches, door knobs, phones and computer keyboards will get special attention.
  2. Easy access, for all guests and staff, to hand washing and hand sanitation stations.
  3. Signage encouraging hand washing, safe coughing practices and general germ prevention.

Regarding summer camper protection, all NLOM programs will continue to follow American Camp Association (ACA) standards, which dictate that staff must “check for observable evidence of illness, injury, or communicable disease.” In addition to standard procedures, NLOM will implement these extra precautions for the summer camp:
  1. Health screening of every camper and staff member at check-in. NLOM will take every person’s temperature and asks questions regarding recent illness and exposure. If there is any question, arrangements will be made with the camper to come for a different week when threats aren’t present.
  2. Any camper showing symptoms in line with the H1N1 virus will be isolated, professional medical assistance will be sought and the camper’s parents will be notified immediately.
  3. If H1N1 diagnosis is suspected or made, other camper parents will also be notified.
In addition, all summer staff will carry hand sanitizer solution with them and practice frequent hand washing with campers. NLOM is taking seriously its role in the prevention of the spreading of this possible pandemic. This strategy came about after NLOM sought guidance of the American Camp Association, Centers for Disease Control and area medical professionals.
